Thyroid Disorders
About Thyroid Disorders
The thyroid gland is perhaps one of the more important glands in the body, alongside its command and control, the pituitary gland. The thyroid gland secretes the thyroid hormone, an important hormone that is involved in the diverse functions of various organs and processes in the body. In order for the body to operate at optimum levels, the thyroid gland has to produce just enough thyroid hormone — not more and not less. When the body has a lesser or greater amount of thyroid hormone, the pituitary gland instructs the thyroid gland to adjust production accordingly. When these instructions go unheeded, this gives rise to thyroid problems. Hyperthyroidism is where the thyroid gland is producing too much hormone and hypothyroidism is where it’s producing too little.
Symptoms of hyperthyroidism include:
• Increase in bowel movements and sweating
• Weight loss
• Irritability
• Vision problems
• Fatigue
• Light menstruation
• Anxiety or nervousness
On the other hand, symptoms of hypothyroidism include:
• Constipation
• Weight gain
• Dry skin and hair
• Heavy menstruation
• Fatigue
• Intolerance to cold
Diagnosing Thyroid Disorders
Figuring out what causes thyroid problems is perhaps at the heart of diagnosing and treating thyroid issues. This is why at Dr. Rizvi’s clinic we treat thyroid issues as serious issues that require immediate intervention. When you come in, the doctor will assess you for any symptoms that may point to thyroid problems, as outlined above. If the doctor suspects it may be a misfiring thyroid gland, he will order a number of tests including blood tests, ultrasound, radioiodine scanning and uptake, and finally a biopsy if indeed there appears to be a growth attached to the thyroid.
The important thing to note is that not all thyroid issues are severe, so a complete diagnosis is what will determine the way forward. That said, it is always good to ensure your thyroid functions are checked at least once a year especially if you experience any thyroid-related symptoms.
