Sports Physicals for Schools
About Sports Physicals
Sports physicals are done to evaluate an athlete’s general health, current fitness level, risk of injury, and physical well-being. The casualties of teen sports can be minor – sprained ankles and repetitive strains or serious like heat stroke or exercise-induced asthma. Some children are also allergic towards bees and other stinging insects found around playing fields. Thus, a physical check-up before setting up for play can prevent health issues.
What Happens During The Physical
During the sports physical, a healthcare professional looks for any diseases or injuries that could make it unsafe to participate in sports. He also reviews the family’s medical history to ensure additional tests are performed if necessary. The sports physical must ideally be planned about six to eight weeks before the sports schedule.
It consists of two parts: a medical history and a physical examination. The medical history helps the healthcare provider understand if there were any serious family illness or past injuries so that a proper treatment plan can be designed to prep the athlete for competition.
The physical part usually involves the following:
• Recording height and weight
• Taking a blood pressure and pulse (heart rate and rhythm) reading
• Testing vision
• Checking heart, lungs, abdomen, ears, nose, and throat
• Evaluating posture, joints, strength, and flexibility
Follow-Up For A Physical:
If any serious issues are detected during the pre-participation physical examination, necessary steps can be taken to make the athlete fit for play.
