Minor Surgeries
About Minor Surgeries
Minor surgery is a broad term used to describe any kind of surgery that is performed without the need for anesthesia and respiratory assistance. The opposite, major surgery (we do not perform this here), is surgery that is performed with anesthesia and the need for respiratory assistance. While in the past each could be distinguished based on how invasive each is, with today’s modern medical equipment, this distinction has become blurred. Minor surgeries still employ anesthesia although only on a localized basis. They also do not require that you be “put under” (anesthesia) during the procedure.
Performed as an outpatient procedure, some of the conditions treated with minor surgery include:
• Skin tags/Skin Biopsy
• Skin cyst, Abscess
• Incision and Drainage of an Abscess
• Mole removal
• Ingrown toenail removal
Performing Minor Surgery
When you come in for minor surgery, the doctor will first do a thorough examination to ensure there is no risk of complicating factors such as malignancy. After this, the doctor will discuss with you the risks and benefits associated with the procedure, along with how much time it will take, and what outcome to expect. Once the doctor has provided you with all this information and you have signed the consent form, you will then be prepped for surgery.
Follow-up Steps
After the minor surgery is complete, the doctor will require you to come in for check-ups to ensure you are healing properly and there are no complications to the wound. It is important to follow ALL doctor’s instructions during the recovery period to avoid any incidences of infection or other such complications. You may also be required to take certain steps to ensure the proper recovery of the affected area. These will vary in time depending on the procedure although they usually take anything from a few days to three months for complete healing.
